Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Film Genre

Genre in film refers to the different categories or types of movies, like action, comedy, horror, or romance. It helps filmmakers and produces because it gives them a way to target specific audiences and understand what people enjoy watching. It also helps audiences choose movies based on their preferred genre and know what to expect. A subgenre is more specific categories within a broader film genre. For example, within the horror genre, you have subgenre like supernatural horror, slasher horror, or psychological horror. It's important because they allow filmmakers and producers t further cater to specific audience preferences. They help narrow down the type of film more.

The purpose of this assignment was for me to pick a main genre and to select a subgenre to identify the mise en scene elements that can be understood by the viewers. The genre I chose was horror and the subgenre as supernatural horror. Iconography in film refers to the use of visual symbols, images, or motifs that have specific meanings or associations within a particular genre or context. In supernatural horror there's several: full moon, haunted house, ouija board, and a pentagram. Narrative themes are the underlying ideas, concepts, or messages that are explained and conveyed throughout the story. They provide a deeper meaning and insight into the plot, characters, and overall narrative structure. In supernatural horror there's several: the fear of the unknown, loss of control, confronting the past, and the thin vail between realities.

Reflection Paragraph

The media text I created was a bubble diagram. The purpose of creating it was to document the relationship of the mis en scene elements withe a genre and subgenre. On the assignment I did research on different types of genres and what their subgenres are. I asked for help from my teacher when I got a bit confused, and she helped me come up with the idea of a doing a horror genre and a supernatural horror as the subgenre. The media tools I used most was a laptop and my phone to use for research for this assignment. I would say that I'm an expert on outlining the elements of mise en scene and I learned more about them to do good on this assignment.

Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Mise en scene

The movie I choose is called, "Scream 5". It's a horror, thriller, mystery, and comedy horror movie. The opening scene starts with a high school student, Tara, she's home alone when she gets a phone call. Later, she gets attacked by Ghost-face and is left hospitalized. The film producers use the elements of mise en scene in the film opening good. Using a blood red color to show that she's bleeding and the actress showcasing that she is in pain. The mood of the film opening is very suspenseful and ominous.
